What Is Ayurveda?

While Ayurveda, is still largely based on traditional Indian medicine, it has also evolved in recent years to include a much more scientifically-based approach to nutrition, health, beauty, and natural skincare. This has lead to a huge increase in research focused on the various benefits of Ayurveda for our body, hair, and skincare.

Understanding Ayurveda Skin Types and Doshas

When looking at Ayurvedic skincare routines and treatments it is important to understand and consider different skin types. While all-natural ingredients are generally beneficial for all types of skin, different Ayurvedic treatments work best on the right skin. Making it important to focus on a regular skincare routine based on the skin type and dosha type a person has.

In Ayurveda, Doshas are the forces that make up the body and mind.

Doshas are the unique physical, emotional and mental constitutions that influence the body, mind, and even skin. Each person has their own dominant dosha type or a combination of doshas.

The 3 Dosha types that make up a persons skin are:

VATA (wind)

PITTA (fire)

KAPHA (earth & water)

      • Vata

A vata dominant person has thin, dry, and rough skin that can be wrinkle-prone especially if not moisturized regularly.

People with Vata type skin are prone to earlier signs of ageing and are likely to have thin flakier skin with finer pores. This skin type is likely to need more moisturizing daily.

We recommend using oil-based moisturizers such as Sesame oil, Almond oil, and Sunflower oil which work well with their warming effects and can penetrate deep into dry skin, bringing balance to Vata dosha type skin.

      • Pitta

People that are Pitta dominant tend to have oily skin that is susceptible to rashes and that is prone to acne, rosacea, and inflammation.

This skin type needs more cooling elements like aloe vera creams, as well as anti-inflammatory elements such as Turmeric, and Rosemary. Coconut oil and Sunflower oil and important oils for Pitta dosha types as they can help control sensitive and reactive skin and help moisturise and smooth the skin throughout the day.

      • Kapha

Kapha skin tends to be cold, oily, and prone to enlarged pores making skin susceptible to pimples, whiteheads, and water retention. Kapha skin needs more regular exfoliation.

For Kapha dosha types we would suggest using less oil-based creams and applying face masks regularly as it is important to balance the skin rather than increase the oil levels.

When using oil-based creams and moisturizers it is important to focus on herbal oils for their purifying properties but very important not to overuse them in a Kapha skincare routine.

You Can Have More Than One Dosha Type

We don’t all fit into just one skin type, and many can have a combination of doshas. It is important to identify this not just by how your skin reacts throughout the seasons, but how you feel physically and emotionally too.

For example, If your skin is particularly oily you may want to take a Kapha approach, or if you have come out in a sudden rash or redness you may need to adopt a Pitta approach in your routine.

When you are taking into account natural skincare routine, you might also need to adopt some diet and lifestyle changes based around these doshas also.

Your Dosha Can Change Between Seasons

In addition to changes and flare-ups throughout the year, dosha types can also just as easily change with each season.

It can be beneficial to identify these changes and alter your skincare routine to adopt these changes. Perhaps a cooling routine based on Pitta for the summer and a warm comforting routine based around Vata for the winter months. And for others, a Pitta routine in winter may be what they need if they suffer from rosacea or redness flare-ups in the colder months.
