We recommend using a cold-pressed aloe vera-based cleanser, especially if you have sensitive skin. 

A cold-pressed gel or juice will be much gentler on your face and generally will not be mixed with other chemicals.

When used as a cleanser, aloe vera is a great way to hydrate and soothe your skin while also controlling flaking, redness, inflammation or tightness.

It’s perfect for cleansing delicate, sensitive or dry skin.

You can use aloe vera gel directly on your hair, or find a nice aloe vera based shampoo or conditioner toa dd to your routine.

Aloe vera contains proteolytic enzymes, which can help to repair dead skin cells on the scalp.

While aloe vera helps with inflammation and damage caused by acne, it won’t stop the buildup and formation of acne breakouts.

Acne is multi-factorial, which means that several things contribute to its formation. In addition to inflammation, dead skin cells, over-active oil glands, hormones, and genetics all play a role in acne development. 

Unfortunately, aloe vera isn’t been shown to be effective against any of these factors. 

While it may help with inflammation, it won’t prevent pores from becoming blocked in the first place, so it is not a treatment to stop acne in its tracks.

However, if you do suffer from acne, aloe vera can go a long way in helping treat any damage caused by long-term breakouts.

A recent study found aloesin, a compound found naturally in aloe vera, can help reduce the hyperpigmentation found in acne scars. 

It has been shown to help reduce the overproduction of melanin, a darker pigment that can make acne scars more noticeable.

During the study, people applied a combination of aloe vera and arbutin 4 times a day for 15 days. The research found that these two compounds were better able to reduce darkened acne scars than when each compound was used by itself.

That’s generally an indication of a higher percentage of aloe being used in the product. And as always, double-check any qualifiers around claims being made about a product.

If you’re shopping online, be sure to take a closer look at any claims about the product to ensure they’re backed up.

And, if you are shopping for aloe vera to use on sensitive skin, be sure to look for a product with no fragrances and, ideally, paraben free.

How to make aloe vera gel at home?

  1. To harvest fresh aloe gel, cut an outer leaf off of a mature aloe plant. 

One or two large leaves should be more than enough for 1 cup of gel. If you’re working with a young plant, be cautious not to damage it by cutting off too many leaves at once. 

  1. Wash the leaf thoroughly, then place it upright in a container to let any yellow coloured resin drip out. 

This yellow resin can be irritating to certain skin types, so its best to remove as much as possible. This could take 15-20 minutes.

  1. Peel off the green leaves until you reach the inner white layer. Cut through this layer to reach the gel.
  1. Scoop the gel out with a spoon.
  1. Place the gel in a sterilized container. 
  1. Pour the mixture into a container and store in the fridge.

Then you can store the pure aloe vera gel in a container inside your fridge for up to 10 days.

Is homemade aloe vera gel safe?

Homemade aloe vera gel is completely safe. Just ensure you remove any of the dark yellow resin from the leaf before harvesting the gel. This yellow resin can be irritating to certain skin types.
